The exercise range is not automatically added to the daily value. Water needs vary too much for one combined number to be a safe personal prescription.
Total water includes more than plain water
The National Academies adult adequate-intake reference is 3.7 liters a day for men and 2.7 liters for women. Pregnancy uses 3.0 liters and breastfeeding 3.8 liters.
Those are total water figures. They include plain water, every other beverage, and moisture in food. The associated beverage amounts are about 3.0 liters for men, 2.2 liters for women, 2.3 liters in pregnancy and 3.1 liters while breastfeeding.
They are adequate intakes rather than recommended dietary allowances. The National Academies notes that wide ranges can be compatible with normal hydration and that an AI should not be read as one person’s exact requirement.
Exercise needs are individual
The displayed exercise range uses 0.4–0.8 liters per hour, a broad planning range commonly cited for most athletes. It is deliberately shown separately.
Sweat loss can vary several-fold with body size, intensity, heat, humidity, clothing, acclimatization and genetics. A long, hot session may require more than a short easy workout, while drinking the high end during cool, low-intensity exercise can exceed losses.
For repeated endurance sessions, change in body mass plus fluid consumed can help estimate personal sweat rate. A sports dietitian or qualified clinician can account for sodium and medical factors.
More is not always better
Excessive drinking can dilute blood sodium, a dangerous condition associated with prolonged exercise. Fluid intake during activity should not cause body weight to rise and should not blindly chase a calculator number.
Thirst, urine pattern, conditions and individual sweat experience all provide context. Severe headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, fainting or other concerning symptoms during exercise require urgent medical attention rather than more calculator use.
When needs change
The CDC notes that needs rise with physical activity, hot climates, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have their own reference values. Older age, medicines and illness can change both thirst and fluid balance.
Kidney, heart and liver conditions may require a clinician-set fluid limit. Anyone who has been given such a plan should follow it instead of a general reference.
What counts as a beverage
Plain water is calorie-free, but milk, tea, coffee and other drinks contribute fluid too. Their sugar, alcohol, caffeine, sodium and nutrients matter separately from their water content.
The calculator does not diagnose dehydration or prescribe treatment. It provides population references and makes their boundaries visible.

The National Academies provides higher total-water reference values: 3.0 L in pregnancy and 3.8 L while breastfeeding. Individual needs and medical instructions still take priority.
Who should not use a general water target?
