What this tool does
A QR code is a small square pattern that stores text. Point a phone camera at
it and the phone reads that text and offers to act on it — open a website, join
a Wi-Fi network, start an email, dial a number. This generator builds one for
you, lets you style it, and gives you a file to download.
Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the
codes never expire, because the information lives inside the pattern rather than
on a server that has to keep running.
The eight code types

- Opens a web address. The most common use by far — menus, product pages,
reviews, sign-up forms. You can leave off thehttps://; it
is added for you. - Opens a new message with the address, subject and body already filled
in. The person still presses send, so nothing is sent without them. - Call
- Puts a phone number into the dialler. Include the country code
(+1,+44,+974) so the code works
for people visiting from abroad. - SMS
- Opens a text message to a number, optionally with the message already
written. Useful for short-code sign-ups and feedback lines. - Wi-Fi
- Joins a network without anyone typing the password. Ideal for cafés,
waiting rooms and holiday rentals. - FaceTime
- Starts a FaceTime video or audio call to a phone number or Apple ID.
This one works on Apple devices only. - Map
- Opens a set of coordinates in whichever map app the phone uses. Because
it uses the standardgeo:format rather than one company’s
link, it works on both Android and iPhone. - Spotify
- Opens a track, album, artist or playlist directly in the Spotify app.
Paste the ordinary share link and it is converted for you.
Choosing colors that actually scan
A scanner reads a QR code by separating dark modules from light ones, so the
two colors have to be clearly different in lightness — not merely
different in hue. Two colors can look completely distinct to you and still be
nearly identical to a camera converting them to grey.
Three rules cover almost every failure:
- Keep the pattern dark and the background light.
Inverting this works on some scanners and fails on others. - Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 3:1. This tool
measures it as you pick and warns you when the two colors are too
close. - Avoid pale yellows, light oranges and mid greys for the
pattern itself. They are the usual culprits.
Error correction, and why a logo changes it
Every QR code carries redundant copies of its data, so it still reads when
part of it is scratched, creased or blocked. How much redundancy is the error
correction level:
- Low (L) — about 7% recoverable. Smallest, densest code.
- Medium (M) — about 15%. A sensible default for screens.
- Quartile (Q) — about 25%. Good for printed material.
- High (H) — about 30%. For labels, packaging and anything
that will be handled.
A centre logo covers part of the pattern, which is exactly the kind of damage
error correction exists to survive. That is why adding one here switches the
code to High automatically. Keep the logo small — roughly a fifth of the width,
which is what this tool uses — and always test-scan the result before printing a
thousand of them.

If you are sending the code to a printer, send the SVG. Scaling a PNG up is
the single most common reason a printed code comes out fuzzy and refuses to
scan.
Printing: size and quiet space
Two things decide whether a printed code works.
Size. A rough guide is that the code should be about a tenth
of the distance it will be scanned from. Scanned at arm’s length (1 ft / 30 cm),
1.2 in (3 cm) across is comfortable. On a poster read from 10 ft (3 m), it needs
to be around 12 in (30 cm). Below about 0.8 × 0.8 in (2 × 2 cm), ordinary phone
cameras start to struggle regardless.
Quiet space. The empty margin around the pattern is part of
the code, not decoration — it is how a scanner finds the edges. This tool
includes the required margin in every download. Do not crop it, and do not let
artwork or a border encroach on it.
A note on Wi-Fi codes
A Wi-Fi QR code contains the password in plain text. Anyone who scans it
joins the network, and anyone who photographs it can extract the password with
any QR reader. That is fine — and genuinely convenient — for a guest network in
a café or a holiday rental. Think twice before putting one on a network that
also reaches your own computers, and consider setting up a separate guest
network instead.
Static codes and what they cannot do
The codes here are static: the destination is baked into the
pattern, which is why they work forever and need no account. The trade-off is
that you cannot change where an already-printed code points, and you get no scan
statistics.
If you need either, point the code at a URL you control — a short link or a
page on your own site — and change the redirect at that end. The printed code
never has to change.
Frequently asked questions
Do these QR codes expire?
No. The code is generated in your browser and the information is stored inside the pattern itself, not on our servers. There is nothing to expire, no account to keep active, and no redirect that can be switched off later. A printed code will still work years from now.
Is my information sent anywhere?
No. Everything — including Wi-Fi passwords and phone numbers — is processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, and the logo you add never leaves your device.
Can I use these QR codes commercially?
Yes. The codes are yours to use on packaging, signage, business cards, menus or anywhere else, at no cost and with no attribution required.
Which format should I download?
Choose SVG for anything that will be printed — it is a vector, so it stays sharp at any size, from a business card to a billboard. Choose PNG for websites, email and social media, especially if you need a transparent background. Choose JPG only when something specifically requires it; JPG cannot store transparency.
Why does a QR code with a logo need high error correction?
QR codes store redundant data so they still scan when part of the pattern is dirty, creased or covered. A logo deliberately covers part of the pattern, so the tool automatically switches to the highest level (about 30% recoverable) whenever you add one. Even so, always test-scan a code with a logo before printing it.
My code won’t scan. What went wrong?
The three usual causes are low contrast, too little quiet space, and printing too small. Keep the code clearly darker than its background — this tool warns you when the two colors are too close. Never crop the empty margin around the pattern. And keep the printed code at least 2 × 2 cm, larger if it will be scanned from a distance.
Can I change where the code points after printing it?
Not with a static code like this one — the destination is encoded in the pattern. If you need to change it later, point the code at a URL you control (a short link or a page on your own site) and change the redirect at that end instead.
