Converting military time to standard time

The minutes never change. For an hour from 13 through 23, subtract 12 and use PM: 1730 becomes 5:30 PM. Hours from 01 through 11 use AM, while 1200 is noon.

A leading zero keeps military time at four digits. That makes 7:05 AM 0705, not 705, although the converter accepts either form as input. Military time is often spoken digit by digit or as “zero seven hundred five hours,” but pronunciation does not change the written value.

Converting standard time to military time

For PM times after noon, add 12 to the hour and remove the colon. Thus 1:15 PM becomes 1315 and 11:59 PM becomes 2359. AM hours retain their number and receive a leading zero when needed.

Noon and midnight are the two boundaries that do not follow an “add 12” shortcut. Noon is 1200. Midnight at the start of a day is 0000.

0000 and 2400 are a date boundary

0000 and 2400 both describe midnight, but they communicate different sides of the boundary. 0000 Monday starts Monday; 2400 Sunday ends Sunday. Those labels can point to the same instant.

The converter preserves 2400 when you enter it and labels the standard result as the next day. It rejects values such as 2401, because a 24-hour clock begins a new day after 24:00.

Military time and the 24-hour clock

Both systems number the hours from 00 through 23. The usual difference is notation: military time normally omits the colon and uses four digits, while civilian 24-hour clocks commonly show a colon. 1845 and 18:45 therefore represent the same clock time.

Neither format contains a time zone. “1300” is only one o’clock in the afternoon on a clock; it does not say whether that clock is in New York, London or Tokyo. Use a time-zone converter when the location matters.
