The Celsius to Fahrenheit formula

°F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32

Multiply by nine fifths — that is, by 1.8 — then add 32. Worked through with 20 °C: 20 × 1.8 = 36, and 36 + 32 = 68 °F.

The Fahrenheit to Celsius formula

°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9

Subtract 32 first, then multiply by five ninths. Worked through with 98.6 °F: 98.6 − 32 = 66.6, and 66.6 × 5 ÷ 9 = 37 °C.

The order matters. Subtracting after multiplying, or adding 32 before scaling, gives the wrong answer — the offset has to be applied on the Fahrenheit side of the multiplication.

Why the conversion needs two steps

The two scales disagree about both the size of a degree and where zero sits. Water freezes at 0 °C but at 32 °F, and boils at 100 °C but at 212 °F. That is 100 Celsius degrees covering the same span as 180 Fahrenheit degrees, which is where the 9 ÷ 5 ratio comes from, while the 32 accounts for the different starting points.

A temperature difference is the exception: it converts by the multiplier alone. A rise of 5 °C is a rise of 9 °F, with no offset involved.

The two scales meet at exactly one point. At −40, Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same number.
